What is dyslexia?

Most of the articles in the literature have defined dyslexia in varied ways, but their topics appear to suggest one point: dyslexia is the inability to read words (Alexander & Slinger-Constant, 2004; Hudson, High, & Otaiba, 2007). Moreover, "dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities" (Lyon, Shaywitz, & Shaywitz, 2003). In addition, dyslexic readers often have difficulties with reading comprehension (Hudson et al., 2007). The word specific is used to denote that only a particular area of learning ability is affected such as poor reading skills (Long, MacBlain, & MacBlain, 2007).
